Known as the Fourth of July, Independence Day commemorates the moment in 1776 when the 13 British colonies, which now make up the eastern coast of the United States, gained their independence and laid the foundation for the USA. While political speeches and displays of patriotism in red, white, and blue are customary, most people view this national holiday as an opportunity to celebrate. Festivities include picnics, barbecues, baseball games, parades, carnivals, and fireworks, which are held throughout the country. Here are some recommended locations to participate in these festivities:
- Washington, DC
In Washington, the main event is an annual parade on Constitution Avenue featuring floats, military tanks, and marching bands from across the country. The Capitol Fourth Concert, held on the West Lawn of the US Capitol, showcases performances by renowned pop, R&B, and Broadway artists. The highlight, however, is the annual fireworks display at the National Mall, where you can witness the spectacular show from various vantage points, including both sides of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
- New York, New York
Macy’s annual 4th of July fireworks show on New York’s East River is the largest in the country, featuring an impressive 65,000 pyrotechnics. Accompanied by performances from top stars singing popular and Broadway tunes, the event is a must-see. Additionally, fireworks take place each year on Coney Island’s boardwalk, famous for hosting the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest. For a great view of the fireworks, visit One World Observatory, located in One World Trade Center.
- Los Angeles, California
When it comes to pyrotechnics, LA knows how to throw a party. The Hollywood Bowl and Rose Bowl stadium in Pasadena host annual firework displays followed by concerts. You can also catch the Queensway Bay fireworks from Long Beach’s waterfront and the Marina del Rey fireworks from Marina Beach, Burton Chace Park, or Fisherman’s Village. Hollywood Forever Cemetery combines fireworks with film screenings, while further north, an afternoon concert followed by fireworks takes place off Sunset Boulevard. In 2021, there will be a flypast of Second World War fighter planes in the afternoon, signaling the start of a parade featuring baton twirlers and marching bands along the boulevard.
- Chicago, Illinois
Navy Pier on Lake Michigan is renowned for its Independence Day festival and fireworks, which this year will be held on Saturday, July 2nd. The annual Downers Grove parade also takes place, starting at 10 am from Main Street and ending at Warren Street. Celebrate the holiday at the annual concert in Grant Park, where the Grant Park orchestra performs a medley of tunes. For a culturally rich experience, Washington Park hosts the International Festival of Life, offering the best in Caribbean and African cuisine, music, and performances.
- Houston, Texas
The Red, Hot & Blue Festival is an annual event in The Woodlands neighborhood, featuring street food stalls, live bands, and children’s activities. Centennial Park hosts food vendors, singers, and fireworks. Galveston Island, on the outskirts of the city, showcases an annual parade of floats, military vehicles, and performers, followed by a new drone show. Don’t miss the fireworks at Lake Woodlands, which can be viewed from Northshore Park, Town Green Park, Waterway Square District, Waterway Avenue, or Rob Fleming Park.
